2001 R.D. Hinson Derby Classic Winner

By Kent D. Patterson

Ortho Acres Booker T - Tom Tracy h.

Sherry Ebert of Mott, ND and David Justice from nearby Selma, AL were in-saddle to watch this group of teenagers and did an excellent job of giving each dog and handler their full attention. Both know dogs and are positive judges with the confidence to judge a stake against the standard. They found what they were looking for in two dogs. Ortho Acres Booker T, owned by John Kozlowski, and handled by Tom Tracy Jr. was named the winner with an extremely wide and strong race for 45 minutes punctuated with one piece of birdwork. Booker is out of Chubasco II and Shady's Chick-N-Little. Tennessee Powerglide, owned and handled by Kent Patterson of Franklin, TN, was named runner-up displaying an intelligent forward race with birdwork near the mid-point and a nice finish. Harley is out of Winchester of Hanging Jaze and Rosie's Blazing Star.

Booker and Flash (TJ's Blaze of Lightning - Jim John) hooked up at breakaway and went around the right side of an island of cover as we headed down the hill toward the big CRP field. At 12, Booker began to stretch as he made an extremely wide and extended clockwise cast around the far left edge of the course that brought him to the front as we headed toward Safford Road. At 16, both dogs watered themselves as we headed toward Safford Road. Flash had shortened a bit while Booker began to gain momentum. At 26, Booker was on point with Tom flushing birds out of a fence line while Flash displayed derby manners on birds across the field at 28. At time, Booker was well down course and very strong. Brace 8: G&M Hi-Spirit Rowdee Radar - Chuck Angus and Brendi Brooks Colonel - Tom TracyRadar and Colonel were away from Safford Road with both dogs making nice moves over the first 10 minutes to birdy cover. They continued at moderate range through the middle portions of the brace as we crossed the big CRP field where Colonel got hung-up and lateral. Tom elected to put him on a rope. Radar made an extended cast down in the left corner of the CRP field with the scout working hard to get him back on course. Upon his return at 36, the temperature and effort appeared to have taken its toll as he finished at hunting range down a line toward Safford Road.
