2001 R.D. Hinson Derby Classic

By Kent D. Patterson

It should not be surprising that a premiere adult championship would attract premiere juvenile dogs. Who could resist an opportunity to run a young derby over the spacious grounds of Tara Hill Plantation and enjoy watching their enthusiasm from the opening whistle? The R.D. Hinson Derby Classic is a natural companion stake to the Deep South Brittany Free-For-All Championship. It showcases young stars just as the Victore Nationale frames the U.S. Open. This year's group of hopefuls showed many youngsters with every intention of coming back for the "big dance" and make their mark as long-term competitors. This stake is so named to honor Robert D. Hinson, a founding member of the Central Gulf Coast Brittany Club, and a staunch supporter of aspiring derbies. He is credited with bringing high quality Brittany's to the Deep South area of southern Alabama and northern Florida and helping with any chore to contribute to the success of the Brittany clubs in the area. Started in 1996, the stake is a 45-minute event looking for juvenile stars with all the qualities needed to become successful in the Free-For-All format.

Sherry Ebert of Mott, ND and David Justice from nearby Selma, AL were in-saddle to watch this group of teenagers and did an excellent job of giving each dog and handler their full attention. Both know dogs and are positive judges with the confidence to judge a stake against the standard. They found what they were looking for in two dogs. Ortho Acres Booker T, owned by John Kozlowski, and handled by Tom Tracy Jr. was named the winner with an extremely wide and strong race for 45 minutes punctuated with one piece of birdwork. Booker is out of Chubasco II and Shady's Chick-N-Little. Tennessee Powerglide, owned and handled by Kent Patterson of Franklin, TN, was named runner-up displaying an intelligent forward race with birdwork near the mid-point and a nice finish. Harley is out of Winchester of Hanging Jaze and Rosie's Blazing Star.

THE RUNNING

A chilly morning brought heavy frost and clear blue skies for the opening brace.

Brace 1:
Rolling Plains Traveler - Tom Tracy
Breton's Blazin tough Co-Dee - Jim John

Traveler and Co-Dee went straight out across a plowed field enjoying pushing "dickie" birds skyward. Both dogs came back across the front at 5 as we headed into a bottleneck of woods. At 15, Traveler made a nice move across a side hill with Tom pointing him out while Co-Dee returned for Jim from a wooded area to the right. At 25, the gallery rode-up a nice big covey as both dogs showed well in the big CRP field. At 43, Traveler displayed derby manners on a find beneath a big oak tree near Tara Hill. Co-Dee was birdless in his time down.

Brace 2:
Chesterfield's Original Formula - Bo Ackerman
Country Road's Navigator - Julianne Stout

Coke and Andy were away from Hamilton Road with both dogs highly animated down a line to the right. The early morning cool temperature and available space had both "wide-eyed" and enjoying their opportunity. At 4, Judge Ebert saw Andy with birds located, Julianne stepped off and shot. Both dogs continued to hunt well over the next 20 minutes reaching for objectives nicely. At 25 on island of cover, Andy displayed derby manners once again that seemed to energize him over the next 10 minutes as he was out of pocket. Coke was managing the course nicely and was rewarded with birdwork at 34 just across Safford Road. Both dogs finished down a line to the right of the course at time.

Brace 3:
Jim DeBob's Sparks A Ringo - Jim John
Tennessee Powerglide - Kent Patterson

Ringo and Harley we released at 10:02 toward Tara Hill with Harley headed to the right and Ringo speeding straight away. Ringo was seen one last time as we headed up toward Tara Hill with Jim eventually asking for the tracking receiver at 16. Harley maintained the front and ran the edges along the big CRP with intelligent casts that kept him in touch as we turned back toward Safford Road. At 34, along a strip of Egyptian wheat, Harley displayed derby manners on a covey that lifted in all directions. He continued to point several from the busted covey until collared and taken across Safford Road where he finished with a nice swing along the left edge of the well pasture that brought him down a line to the front.

Brace 4:
Royal Rocket Man - Ben Lorenson
Maxed-Out - Bo Ackerman

Buzz and Max were sent away from Safford Road with both dogs reaching for the course limits over the first 10 minutes. Max had been out of pocket briefly but returned at 12 as we turned back east near Tara Hill Lake. We had both dogs and handlers as we headed into the big CRP field with Buzz headed straight into a pine thicket where Ben raised his cap for a derby find. Meanwhile, Max was making a big move to the right. At 44, Bo had his hat in the air and shot. As the judges came around the corner, birds were in the air with Buzz in hot pursuit and Max down a line to the right.

Brace 5:
Dixie Kid Ultimate ATV - Tom Tracy
TJ's Busting Loose - Jim John

Hummer and Buster were released behind the Caine family home with both dogs headed out across an open plowed field that leads to an island of cover to the north. Both dogs transitioned well into the next open area with Hummer displaying derby manners on a covey stranded on a point of cover as the course turns westward. At 26, we were crossing a big CRP field with Tom working Hummer in cover to the right and Buster shortening. At 36, Buster came from behind down Safford Road and Jim elected to pick him up. Hummer finished with a broke find near Hamilton Road.

Brace 6:
Just Call Me Roy - Ben Lorenson
Hi-Scor Miss Millennium - Tom Tracy

Roy and Millie were released alongside Hamilton Road and were a handful over the early portions of the course as they took in considerable amounts of real estate. At 25, as we crossed the well pasture Millie had shortened considerably and Tom elected to pick her up while Roy continued across Safford Road. A derby find was recorded for Roy at 33 and he spent the remaining time lateral to forward toward Tara Hill.

Brace 7:
Ortho Acres Booker T - Tom Tracy
TJ's Blaze of Lightning - Jim John

Booker and Flash hooked up at breakaway and went around the right side of an island of cover as we headed down the hill toward the big CRP field. At 12, Booker began to stretch as he made an extremely wide and extended clockwise cast around the far left edge of the course that brought him to the front as we headed toward Safford Road. At 16, both dogs watered themselves as we headed toward Safford Road. Flash had shortened a bit while Booker began to gain momentum. At 26, Booker was on point with Tom flushing birds out of a fence line while Flash displayed derby manners on birds across the field at 28. At time, Booker was well down course and very strong. Brace 8: G&M Hi-Spirit Rowdee Radar - Chuck Angus and Brendi Brooks Colonel - Tom TracyRadar and Colonel were away from Safford Road with both dogs making nice moves over the first 10 minutes to birdy cover. They continued at moderate range through the middle portions of the brace as we crossed the big CRP field where Colonel got hung-up and lateral. Tom elected to put him on a rope. Radar made an extended cast down in the left corner of the CRP field with the scout working hard to get him back on course. Upon his return at 36, the temperature and effort appeared to have taken its toll as he finished at hunting range down a line toward Safford Road.

Brace 9:
Cooper's Ozark Traveler - Rob Rohner
Chikamin's Double Trouble - Jim John

Cooper and Skipper were released under clear blue skies with temperatures in the mid 40's. Both dogs went right and left accordingly with handlers getting them rounded up and to the front. At 10, Skipper was standing on a finger of cover with Jim flushing birds and dog displaying derby manners. Both dogs settled into a nice forward pattern over the next 25 minutes as we headed toward Tara Hill. At 43, Jim raised his cap for Skipper but when the judge arrived the dog was moving and no birds seen. We finished the brace below the Hamilton Road equipment shed with both dogs at moderate range.

Brace 10:
Boot's Miss Hanging Tough - C.M. Mitchell
Raz's Longhaul Trucker - Rob Rohner

Tuffy and Charlie were released from Tara Hill and shot down the knoll to the northeast. Charlie took the right while Tuffy used the left. In the big CRP field, both dogs got hung up deep to the left with both handlers working to get them back to the front as we headed toward cover to the north. At 17, Charlie was to the front and on a line as we turned for home, Tuffy was watered and shot toward the pine thicket where she styled up. Boots stepped in front and moved a single with Tuffy displaying excellent adult manners. Taken on both dogs finished in the well pasture with Charlie having a derby find off an extended cast around the north end of the field.
